MATES is a queer rom-com with a sci-fi twist: an 11-year-old boy is transported into the near future, where he must reunite his 18-year-old self with his childhood best friend. As antics ensue and emotions unravel, it becomes awfully apparent that it’s more than a friendship he’s rekindling.

Whilst creating this pitch, I wanted to develop an idea that felt true to the queer experience growing up in seemingly progressive spaces, whilst also incorporating a fun, high-concept angle that would appeal to a wide audience. It’s BACK TO THE FUTURE meets HEARTSTOPPER.
