(MY) TOP 10 HORROR MOVIES. EVER.EVER.

Warning: Subjective opinions ahead.

Additional Warning: Scary stuff.

ALIEN (1979)

Over five decades later, Alien still holds up. The effects, the spine-tingling atmosphere, the iconic creature design. Not to mention one of the most famous scenes in film history.

Alien is a must-watch.

JENNIFER’S BODY (2009)

Depending on who you ask, putting Jennifer’s Body on a top 10 list is either a sign of poor taste or great taste. This feminist flick about a boy-hungry cheerleader is a controversial one. But you know what else it is? Fun. So to those who may question this film’s place on this list, I must ask; do you not like fun?

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (1984)

A Nightmare on Elm Street is a classic for a reason. The premise is inspiring, the villain is unforgettable, and the final girl is thoroughly root-able. Its 2010 remake may be a little underwhelming, but the original will forever be untouchable.

EVIL DEAD (2013)

Unpopular opinion: Evil Dead (2013) is better than the original.

Slightly less unpopular opinion: Evil Dead (2013) is one of the greatest horror remakes ever. Its relentless, blood-drenched runtime is about as tight and as tense as it could be. Nightmare, take notes.

MISERY (1990)

Misery is one of the greatest adaptations to ever come out of Stephen King’s body of work. Kathy Bates’ sinisterly obsessive performance, as well as the claustrophobic setting, is enough to sell it alone.

READY OR NOT (2019)

Here comes the brightest example of an underrated horror film in years. Decades, even. Mark my words; Ready or Not - a film about the worst wedding night and the worst in-laws and the worst game of hide-and-seek ever - will be a cult classic. This movie will have you holding your breath, and letting out a surprising amount of laughs, up until the final line of dialogue.

THE CABIN IN THE WOODS (2012)

One of the greatest things a genre film can have in this day and age is the power to be subversive. Thanks to its unique premise, The Cabin in the Woods grabs its subversiveness with a giant deity fist. If you’ve survived your life so far without knowing the plot, I won’t spoil it. Just watch it. Trust me. If you like movies about cabins in the woods, you’ll like it. If you don’t, you’ll still like it.

A QUIET PLACE (2018)

It was hard for the world to keep quiet about this film when it first came out. The premise is ingenious; a world infested by monsters who hunt by sound. The hook of having to stay absolutely silent in order to survive lends itself so perfectly to chest-tightening tension. A Quiet Place is a masterclass in suspense, and has emerged as the single greatest horror film of the 2010s. Well, almost…

Get Out (2017)

You knew this was coming. It’s hard to make a list about horror movies and not include Get Out. It’s one of those rare films that’s even better on the second viewing, or the third, or even the fourth. From the lean pacing to the stellar acting, it’s no wonder how this film got its Oscar. The world will never look at milk and cereal the same way ever again.

SCREAM (1996)

Everyone else can take their chainsaws and kitchen knives and go home. This revolutionary teen slasher about a stab-happy guy in a mask is the psychotic gold star standard of horror. Every death-oriented film has been compared to it ever since. Jennifer’s Body? Scream, but with the cast of Mean Girls. 2017’s Happy Death Day? Scream, but it’s happening on Groundhog Day. Titanic? Scream, but on a ship. I rest my case.
